After learning the basics, I have started the game 3 times and am getting good at quick efficient layouts. I have two islands in OW and two islands in NW.
I believe this is standard to acquire the resources necessary to get Canned Food and Fur Coats. By the time my three supporting islands are producing cotton and peppers this surplus has completely evaporated. Then as I proceed to try to force upgrade of Artisans using pause of industries, and addition of farmers and worker housing, the income amount fluctuates wildly.
I do nothing to the layout and over 5 minutes the income will vary from -1, to 1, several times. I have done this three times. It is a real thing. Its the Artisan - Engineer interface instability. The number and size of the islands are all that changes with the different seeds. From my experience there is no relationship between the size of the seed and the size of the islands. Honestly I have not found any relationship at all.
Some of the Seeds are better than others. Have you tried buying shares of AI islands?
Also if you are in Sandbox mode you can grab islands before the AI players do. If you are having difficulty try just 2 AI players and make them easy. You can rename islands any time. I name them for the primary resource they provide. It helps me keep track. I have so many islands It is hard to keep track. Residences are the main element of all city layouts. They also have to contain roads and basic public buildings including power plants and railway trackswhich fulfill population's basic needs.
Make sure that all residences are in the range of public buildings. Such layouts always have to contain production buildings with farm modules they might require and roads connecting them and ensuring that fast and efficient transportation of goods is possible. Most layouts should also contain a warehouse placed close to final production buildings.
If your layout doesn't contain a warehouse, make sure there is a suitable place for one, right outside the layout's borders. To create new building layouts it is recommended to use Anno Designerinitially created for Annobut which has been updated by developers within the community to support Anno It is easy to use, allows to use icons from the game and automatically calculates how much space is used.

The optimization work started at the Ubisoft Mainz office with a joint team of Ubisoft and Intel engineers.
That was more than 3x slower than it should be for a good gaming experience on a mainstream laptop computer! The engineering team decided to dive into identifying what the performance issues were, and how to fix those.
Games can be bottlenecked by both, and there are multiple methods to evaluate that.
Intel GPA tools visualize performance data from your application, enabling you to understand issues from system-level to individual frame performance. Using the Intel GPA system analyzer experiments it was clear that the game is totally GPU-limited, so the team dived into a frame analysis. The tool quickly highlighted that most of the frame time was spent rendering vegetation.
Diving into these draw calls, we identified that the cause of the low performance was a hardware-specific issue. Vegetation was writing in the Stencil buffer as well as using the clip instruction in the pixel shader for alpha testing.
It was found that it is possible to achieve the same vegetation rendering quality without using the Stencil buffer. After some minor code changes the game is now up and running, this time with about 20 fps performance; twice what it was before! Figure 2. I just have every building saying there is a low workforce and nothing is being produced. I've never played an Anno game before but the game thus' far only tells me there is a problem, but not how to solve it.
The manage workforce button that allows you to change worker happiness is also not explained. One side is a green arrow the other is a pen.

If you go to the right, you will make the people unhappy because they have to work more. You need to build more houses to get more people. Also, check what needs they may be missing when you click on a house, if you lack something, the population goes down. Also, when you make new houses, make sure your production buildings are keeping up with the rate of consumption. I'm in the situation where I need wood to make houses, but I don't have the workforce at the lumberyard to get wood, so what do I do?
What do you mean make sure your production buildings are keeping up with the rate of consumption? How do I check that? You can pause another building to free some farmers or make the lumberjack to work overtime to get faster the wood and lower it back after.
As for the consumption, you can check the harbour or a warehouse, it will show you how much you have from a resource and the rate at which your reserves are either growing, on a standstill or lowering. If a resource, lets say fish, is constantly on the red, the people will get angry and start leaving. What I usually do is placing a number of houses, few producing buildings and let the game run in fast speed for a minute or two to check how is the resource moving.

I have an excess of workers, but not of farmers. Upgrading builders lowers my farmers to critical levels, so before I upgrade buildings, how do I obtain a larger farmer workforce? Its simple Stitch, you build more farmers residences. If you upgrade all your farmers to workers you have no farmers left.
The key is to have buildings for all the different worker types, if you need more workers upgrade some farmers to workers and then if you have too little farmers you build more farmer houses. If they are not satisfied you wont get more population.
